Celebrating diversity

Although more than 10 years old, the Shawano Community High School Culture Club remains as relevant as ever. The club’s mission is to raise students’ awareness of diversity in the school district, community and world. “We try to include all different types of cultures and we like to learn about each other’s cultures,” faculty adviser Melonie Dickie Reopelle said. The club has grown from about a dozen student members five years ago to 30 this year
Packers defensive lineman arrested
Authorities said Wednesday that Green Bay Packers defensive tackle Letroy Guion had been arrested in Florida on felony charges of drug and firearm possession after a traffic stop turned up three-quarters of a pound of marijuana, a 9mm handgun and a bag containing more than $190,000 in cash. Guion, 27, was arrested Tuesday night during a traffic stop in his hometown of Starke, Florida.

Dolores J. Tourtillott
Dolores J. “Daidee” Tourtillott, 85, of Green Bay, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2015. Dolores was born on Oct. 15, 1929, in Eagle River, the daughter of the late Henry and Electa (Elm) Lawe. She grew up on the Menominee Reservation and moved to Kansas to attend Haskell Indian School. In 1948, Dolores was united in marriage to Ray Tourtillott in Neopit. The couple then moved to Chicago. Ray preceded her in death in 1968.
Bernice A. Nitzske
Bernice A. Nitzske, 69, of Embarrass, passed away Sunday morning, Feb. 1, 2015, at the Shawano Medical Center following a brief illness. Bernice was born on Dec. 23, 1945, in Waupaca County as the daughter of the late Elmer C. and Dora (Braatz) Passehl. She grew up in the Clintonville area and was united in marriage to Ralph Nitzske on May 10, 1975, at Christus Lutheran Church, Clintonville.
David Moss
David Michael Moss, 70, of the town of Washington, passed away on Jan. 30, 2015, in Milwaukee. David was born on April 25, 1944, in South Milwaukee to the late Harold and Mary (Connel) Moss. After graduating from high school, David joined the U.S. Navy and proudly served his country, until his honorable discharge in 1966. On June 14, 1969, David was united in marriage to SandraLee M. Paul in South Milwaukee.
John S. Emerson
John S. Emerson, 89, of Shawano, passed away at The Cottages under the loving care of the Memory Unit staff and Heartland Hospice on Sunday, Feb. 1, 2015. A memorial service for John Emerson will be held on Monday, Feb. 9, at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Shawano with Pastor Allen Christensen officiating. Relatives and friends may call at the church on Monday from 9:30 a.m.
David F. Katzenmeyer
David Frank Katzenmeyer, 49, of the town of Belle Plaine, passed away on Jan. 31, 2015, in Shawano. David was born on Sept. 6, 1965, to Frank E. and Donna L. (Darrow) Katzenmeyer in Shawano. David had worked on the Edward Krueger farm, at Reinhart Foods in Shawano and was currently employed at Pierce Manufacturing in Appleton, where he worked for the past 14 years.

Leona L. Russell
Leona L. Russell, 98, formerly of Gresham, passed away peacefully on Sunday evening, Feb. 1, 2015, at Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Seymour, where she has resided for the past 10 years. The former Leona Lindow was born on Feb. 19, 1916, in Gresham, a daughter of the late Herman and Minnie (Wruck) Lindow. She attended country schools in Lyndhurst. Following school she assisted her parents on the family farm for several years.
