The Bonduel Bears, who are notorious for slow starts, took a while to get going at their girls volleyball invitational Tuesday night. In the end, it made them observers, rooting for the underdog, Suring, in the final match of the night to push them into first place. Omro pulled through, though, to win the Bonduel Invitational championship, defeating Suring 15-13 in the final set.

Kathleen Roselle (Arndt) Quade passed away peacefully in her sleep on Aug. 31, 2015, at Unity Hospice in De Pere two and a half years after her cancer diagnosis. Kathleen was born on Feb. 15, 1954, in Shawano, to Arthur and DeLour (Morrow) and was raised in Gillett. She grew up on a farm surrounded by many extended family and friends.

Darwin P. Grignon, 49, of Omro, passed away from injuries sustained during a motorcycle accident in Oshkosh on Aug. 22, 2015. Darwin is survived by his mother, Donna (Dick) Schultz; his father, Patrick Grignon; grandmother, June Schroeder; sisters, Laurie (Irvin) Mueller, Sherri Corn, Selena (Paul) Lueckfeld, Tammy Debauch and Darla Grignon.

Louis “Corky” and Lorraine Flynn have been selected as grand marshals of the 85th Suring Labor Day parade and will receive the Senior Citizenship Award at noon Monday at Veteran’s Memorial Park in Suring. Both have contributed time and talent to various clubs and community activities. It is seldom that you would see one without the other. Corky was born Oct. 15, 1929, in the town of Breed.

Long known as an annual homecoming celebration in Suring, this year’s Labor Day weekend festivities promise to be bigger than ever. After all, a centennial celebration only comes around every 100 years. “For those of us who are here, it’s really a celebration,” said Suring resident Lois Brazeau, treasurer of the Suring Area Historical Society.

The Oconto County Economic Development Corporation is coordinating a fundraising campaign to restore a landmark in northern Oconto County. The Mountain Fire Lookout Tower has been a tourist attraction in Oconto County since it was moved to its current location by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1935. The tower was originally built in 1932 by the Wisconsin Conservation Commission.
