I’m going to cheat a little bit this week and use some comments I made two weeks ago at a joint reunion for the Oconto Falls High School classes of 1956 and 1957, my class. So there we were at Romy’s Holiday Inn in Kelly Lake. It was like we were in a time warp, coming back for a reunion with friends from 58 or 59 years ago whom we seldom see otherwise. Words like “nostalgia” and “the good old days” don’t cut it.

FOOTBALL Gillett falls to undefeated Coleman In a battle of unbeatens in the Marinette & Oconto Conference on Friday night, Coleman emerged victorious over Gillett, 41-8. Alex Zeitler had 284 yards passing and Gillett’s lone touchdown. Brett Milhans led the Tigers (5-1, 3-1 M&O) in rushing with 49 yards on 11 carries. Leeland Kahler had 174 receiving yards on just seven catches.

The Lena Knights of Columbus conducted their annual Punt, Pass and Kick contest for boys ages 8 through 12 at Lena High School on Sept. 21. Each contestant had two punts, passes and kicks. Dane Comins had the best total score of 117.5 feet in the 8-year-old bracket, and Tyler Shallow was second with a score of 116.5. In the 9-year-old bracket, Logan Graef was the winner with a score of 154.5 feet.

The Northern Oconto County Trout Alliance has reopened the historic Lakewood trout rearing station that was formerly operated by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. The alliance will initially raise 16,000 brook trout from fingerlings supplied by the DNR. Once the fish reach at least 7 inches, they will be planted in area streams, likely in October.

After the Bonduel High School girls volleyball team opened up a 7-point lead on host Gillett in the second game of its nonconference match Thursday night, the Tigers fought back. Tough serving by senior setter Jessica Anderson and others created problems for the bigger hitters for Bonduel, which continued to attack despite shaky passing, which led to sets farther off the net. Once Gillett tied the game at 21-21, Bonduel (13-11) found its rhythm.

In an effort to curb childhood obesity, the Green Bay Packers hosted a youth football outreach camp Thursday at Gillett Elementary School. Nearly 150 students participated in the 45-minute session during which five groups of students rotated between five football drills.
