Menominee trailblazer recognized nationally

A member of the Menominee Indian Tribe is winning national honors as a rising young leader among Native Americans in Wisconsin and beyond. Crystal Chapman-Chevalier, the youngest member of the Menominee Tribal Legislature, has been named among the “Native American 40 Under 40” throughout the United States for 2015. Stella Bigfire
Stella Bigfire, 88, of Neopit, died Friday, Nov. 27, 2015, in Shawano. Stella was born on May 24, 1927. She was united in marriage to Elmer Bigfire Sr., and he preceded her in death on Oct. 25, 1988. Stella was a teacher and taught the native Menominee language. Beginning in her youth, Stella was very family oriented and instilled that into her children.

Dwayne R. Hanson
Dwayne R. “Butch” Hanson, 87, of Shawano, passed away unexpectedly on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 26, 2015, in Green Bay. Dwayne was born on Jan. 29, 1928, in Clintonville, a son of the late David and Mary (Allen) Hanson. He was baptized at St. Martin’s Lutheran Church in 1928 and confirmed in 1942. Butch attended St. Martin’s Lutheran School and graduated from Shawano High School in 1946.

Shawano mayor not seeking re-election
Shawano Mayor Lorna Marquardt has announced she will not run for another term in the spring election in April. Marquardt has served as mayor for 14 years and six years prior to that as alderperson. “Although the decision was difficult, I have decided I will not seek re-election,” she said.

Bears ruin Packers’ big night
Jay Cutler and the Chicago Bears spoiled Brett Favre’s big night back with the Green Bay Packers.
