McCrank to seek Assembly seat
Lincoln County Supervisor Elizabeth McCrank has announced her candidacy for the Wisconsin Assembly District 35 seat that includes Lincoln, Langlade, and parts of Shawano, Oconto and Marathon counties. “We need to focus on real-life issues that the majority of our residents face, not contrived crises and gimmicky culture war issues meant to distract from our legislators’ ineffective governance,” the Democrat said in a news release. Walter Robert Arndt, 75, of Lena, passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side on Wednesday, May 22, 2024. He was born on May 7, 1949, in Oconto Falls to the late Robert and Pearl (Robinson) Arndt. Walter graduated from Lena High School in 1967. In September 1969, he enlisted in the Marine Corps. with his brother Mike.

Barbara J. Schaal, 73, of Green Bay, passed away on Thursday, May 23, 2024. She was born on Oct. 11, 1950, in Oconto Falls to the late Alvin and Lorraine (Olson) Schaal. Barbara graduated from Oconto Falls High School. She earned her bachelor’s degree from UW-Superior, her master’s degree from UW-Oshkosh and her Ph.D.

Ruth A. Radke
Ruth A. Radke, 88, Oconto Falls, went to her heavenly home Thursday morning, May 23, 2024. She was born March 25, 1936, in Oconto to Charles and Hilda (Bourassa) Loberger. She graduated from Oconto High School with the class of 1954. On May 17, 1958, she was united in marriage to Rollyn Radke at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Oconto. They made their home in Oconto Falls for the last 66 years.

John Joseph (Jack) Verhagen Jr.
John (Jack) Verhagen Jr., 84, passed away on Monday, May 20. He was born on June 3, 1939, in Suamico to the late John Verhagen Sr. and Mae Brunette. On Sept. 7, 1960, John married Alice White, who proceeded him in death on Sept. 17, 1965. John went on to marry Karan Mlnarik on June 10, 1966, and together they raised seven kids. John joined the United States Marine Corps on Dec. 27, 1958, and was honorably discharged on Jan. 15, 1963.

Joan Mc Donald, 87, of Lena, passed away unexpectedly May 20, 2024, at Bellin Health, Green Bay. Joan was born to the late John and Emily (Nasgovitz) Swenty on Jan. 24, 1937. She married Russell Mc Donald on March 19, 1955, at The Oconto Gospel Chapel. Joan was a member of Section Eight Baptist Church, Pound. Joan enjoyed picking all kinds of berries, especially strawberries, blackberries and blueberries.

Shawano soccer team shut out at the end
May 21 Green Bay East 2, Shawano 0 The Hawks battled hard but fell short in the last 87 seconds when Green Bay East put in two goals, one off a corner, another on a breakaway. Goalkeeper Brynlie Boyles had nine saves. Shawano had eight scoring attempts. The Hawks’ record stands at 5-14. Pulaski 0, Green Bay Southwest 0 For the second time this season, Pulaski played to a 0-0 tie.

Former board members recognized, thanked
Ten former Shawano County supervisors were recognized and thanked for their combined 125 years of service when the County Board gathered May 22. Jerry Erdmann, Mart Grams, Steve Gueths, David Heideman, Devin Krizan, Milton Marquardt Jr., Dick Olson, Grant Staszak, Mike Stupecky and Arlyn Tober did not return to the board at the start of the 2024 term, whether by choice not to seek another term or by the voters who cast ballots for someone else.
