Gillett school resource officer draws nearer

It’s possible the Gillett School District and a local law enforcement agency could hire a school resource officer in time for the start of the new academic year. The district has been talking for several months with the Gillett Police and Oconto County Sheriff’s departments about the possibility of stationing an officer in the school to foster positive relationships and monitor inappropriate behavior. Man dies in ATV crash in Tigerton
A 29-year-old man died in an ATV accident July 20 at the Tigerton OHV Park & Campground, according to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the primary agency investigating the crash. According to a press release from Tigerton Police Chief Michael Weatherwax, at 8:34 a.m., a village employee located two individuals who had struck a tree in the park.

Simonis hired as Gillett special ed director
The Gillett School District has a new director of special education and student services. The school board voted July 17 to hire Wendy Simonis for the post. The former director, Jessica Cappeart, recently informed the district she is taking a position with CESA 7. Superintendent Nathan Hanson told the board that seven people applied for the job, and three came in for interviews.

New superintendent has been busy
Gillett Superintendent Nathan Hanson has hit the ground running, based on his report at his first school board meeting July 17. “It’s been an exciting last couple weeks,” Hanson told the board. “There’s been a lot going on, a lot of things to work with and get on top of.” Hanson spent the past three academic years as superintendent of the White Lake School District. Child sex assault suspect arrested in Texas
A Suring man awaiting trial for child sex assault who removed his GPS monitoring bracelet and disappeared has been arrested in Texas. Oconto County Sheriff Todd Skarban announced July 19 that Michael James Bullock, 41, was arrested in Aransas County and awaiting extradition back to Wisconsin. “The Oconto County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank Sheriff William Mills and his team,” Skarban said in a news release.

NFL draft means opportunity for local business
The director of the Tourism and Economic Development Corporation for the Oconto Region says an NFL Draft task force has been formed to bring as many dollars as possible into Oconto County. Northern county offices, town center coming along
The new Riverview town center and northern Oconto County offices are expected to be open this fall, County Administrator Richard Heath reported during the July 18 monthly county board meeting. Noriega-Avila guilty of assaulting stepdaughter
Pedro Noriega-Avila was found guilty July 19 on all charges in a case that has taken over eight years to prosecute. It took a jury less than three hours to find Noriega-Avila guilty on one county of first-degree sexual assault of a child under 13, two counts of second-degree child sex assault and two counts of incest with a child by a stepparent.
