The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is seeking preliminary public input on proposed modifications to the state’s deer management unit boundaries. The comment period will run Oct. 11-20. The DNR reviews deer management units every few years. This review will focus on the management units in the Northern Forest Zone, the Metropolitan subunits and the boundary lines between the Forest and Farmland Zones.

Sacred Heart Catholic School students in grades 5-8 had the opportunity to put their faith into action when they participated in the Feed My Starving Children Mobile Pack in Green Bay on Oct. 8. Students, middle school staff and parent volunteers traveled to the Green Bay Community Church, where the students engaged in a corporal work of mercy — feeding the hungry.

Shawano Area Matthew 25 is going into its 10th year of having an emergency shelter during the colder months of the year, and Kendra Brusewitz has been there since the beginning. Now, after volunteering with the organization all this time, Brusewitz is taking charge of SAM25 as its executive director.

Oct. 12 Oconto Falls Invite The Panthers placed third with a 4-1 record at their home invite. Oconto Falls went 3-0 in pool play beating New London 25-15, 27-25, NEW Lutheran 25-22, 25-19 and Chilton 25-19, 25-14. In the Gold Bracket, Oconto Falls lost to tournament champion Freedom 23-25, 23-25 but beat NEW Lutheran 25-17, 17-25, 15-11. “I am very proud of how the team came together and played at our home invite,” coach Rochell Otto said.

More than $3 million will be spent on capital improvement projects in Shawano County in 2025, with almost all of it earmarked for highway and bridge projects. The Capital Improvement Committee approved the 2025-29 Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) on Oct. 10, and the Shawano County Board of Supervisors is expected to sign off on it Oct.

The Shawano County Board is expected to vote on a resolution to adopt the 2025 county budget and tax levy when in meets at 3 p.m. Oct. 23 at the county courthouse. General county operations will total $16.5 million, and debt service obligations will be at $3.4 million. Bridge aid will be at $120,884. The gross county tax levy is proposed at $20.03 million.
