Harry H. Deering, 78, formerly of Pulcifer, passed away on Sunday evening, July 27, 2014, at Maple Lane Health Care Center in Shawano. Harry was born on Jan. 5, 1936, in the town of Underhill, Oconto County, a son of the late Edward and Adelia (Karstedt) Deering. He attended the Gillett schools and later entered the United States Army, serving his country from April 8, 1954, until Feb. 11, 1956.

Amy Damveld, of Shawano, presented a check for $1,200 to the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team during their doubleheader softball game at the Minocqua Park Complex on Saturday. This is the second year Damveld made and sold apple, pecan, peanut butter and pumpkin “Patriot Pies.” The pies sold for $10; her cheesecake pies sold for $20.

Does the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department need a conference room? Sheriff candidate Adam Bieber isn’t sure, and it’s one of the questions he has thrown out in his campaign against incumbent Randy Wright. Bieber thinks it’s not just the department’s evidence storage needs that should be re-evaluated but all department space. “I think the Sheriff’s Department itself, the space itself should be looked at,” Bieber said.

An evidence storage room called “grossly inadequate” by a consultant in 2005 is still an issue nine years later in the race for Shawano County sheriff. Incumbent Randy Wright, who has pushed for an evidence storage building since taking office in 2007, is seeking another four-year term.

The Clintonville American Legion baseball team had no trouble dealing with Nekoosa’s home-field advantage, handing the American Legion Class A state tournament hosts a 15-0 loss in five innings at Holland Field. The Diamond Cats (18-5) took an early 6-0 lead and then dropped nine runs on seven hits in the bottom of the fourth inning. No other stats were available Wednesday night. Gillett seventh-grader Ashley Britton recently was crowned National Junior Teen Miss at the 2014 Dream Girls USA Pageant in St. Louis, Missouri. She is the daughter of Jim and Vicky Britton, of Cecil. “I was happy to find out that I had made it into the Top 20 after competing with such amazing and talented young ladies, but I was absolutely overwhelmed when I heard my name being announced as the National Junior Teen Miss!” Ashley said.

The Lena Police Department will hold National Night Out from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5, at the St. Anne Parish grounds. The event is free and open to the community. National Night Out is a national event held across the U.S. every year to promote crime prevention and drug prevention.
