Deadly plant disease found in area

A historically significant plant disease has been found in Marinette County and is potentially present throughout the entire area. Late blight, the disease that caused the Irish potato famine, was confirmed to be the causal agent of disease symptoms found in a home tomato garden. Late blight is a devastating disease of potato and tomato that might also infect pepper and eggplant.
Registration open for chili cook-off
The Oconto Falls Lioness Club will hold its fourth annual Fun Fest Chili Cook-Off on Saturday, Sept. 27, at Memorial Field in Oconto Falls. All cooking and chili enthusiasts are encouraged to enter the cook-off, which is a Lioness Club fundraiser to benefit the Avenue of Lights project in Oconto Falls. Entry fee is $10. Cash prizes of $200, $125 and $75 will be awarded to the top three contestants.
Badger Girls delegate reports to auxiliary
Badger Girls State delegate Samantha Lake attended the August meeting of the Wabeno Unit No. 44 American Legion Auxiliary, which sponsored her trip to the annual program. Lake thanked the auxiliary for enabling her to attend Badger Girls State, which she called “the most amazing and inspirational learning experience.” “Not only did I learn how local and state government work, I made friends from all over the state,” Lake said.
Former Lena residents to lead Dairyfest parade
Richard “Dick” and Mary Ann Glime have been selected as the parade marshals for the 2014 Lena Dairyfest Parade. They will lead the parade at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, in a horse-drawn carriage down Main Street. The Glimes recently left Lena to live in Wisconsin Dells, where they purchased a bakery.
Pavilion is part of Riverview improvements
The town of Riverview has completed several projects, including the installation of a pickle ball court, playground equipment and sand box. A pavilion is almost ready for use. It can be completely enclosed for colder weather, but the four glass garage doors can be opened in warmer weather. The bar and kitchen counter space in the pavilion have yet to be completed. Several meat raffles will be held to generate the revenue to finalize the project.
Lena Dairyfest is Saturday
The Lena community will celebrate Dairyfest on Saturday, Sept. 6, at St. Anne’s Parish grounds in Lena. The celebration begins with the Stampede 5K Walk-Run at Lena High School. Registration starts at 6 a.m., and the Stampede begins at 8 a.m. Chad Misco, 920-373-2319, is chairman. A parade, beginning at 10:30 a.m., will start on the west end of Lena and proceed down Main Street.
Michael Malison
Michael “Mike” C. Malison, of Waukesha, died on Monday, Aug. 25, 2014, at Wheaton Franciscan St. Francis Hospital at the age of 64. He was born in Cadott on Oct. 28, 1949, the son of Charles and Irene (nee Hartenstein) Malison. On March 29, 1969, he married Malinda Nelson at St. Mark’s Ev. Lutheran Church. He retired from the United States Army Reserve, where he proudly served his country.
Phyllis M. Anderson
Phyllis M. Anderson, 87, Mountain, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 30, 2014. She was born April 23, 1927, to the late Phil and Mary (Willes) Heisler. Phyllis married Peter Anderson on Nov. 12, 1949, in Mountain. She worked as an assembler at Milwaukee Faucet and Briggs & Stratton until the couple moved to Mountain and bought the Green Lake Tap and operated it until 1981.
Marion D. Wagner
Marion D. Wagner, 90, passed away on Aug. 29, 2014. She was born on Sept. 8, 1923, to the late Carl and Lena Makholm in the town of Maple Valley. Marion graduated from Suring High School in 1940, attended Waushara County Normal School in Wautoma in 1942 and graduated from Wisconsin University-Stevens Point in 1959.
Helen M. Bogsted
Helen M. Bogsted, 93, Green Bay, and formerly of Suring, passed away Aug. 29, 2014, at Woodside Lutheran Home in Green Bay. She was born May 15, 1921, in Greenwood to the late Anna and Oscar Horn. Helen married Arvide “Andy” Anderson on April 9, 1940. He preceded her in death on May 10, 1948. She later married Oliver “Ollie” Bogsted on Nov. 12, 1949. She attended school in Owen-Withee.
