Service and volunteerism honored at fair

Several area residents were honored Sunday for their dedication and volunteerism during the annual awards program at the Shawano County Fair. Friends of the Fair awards were presented to Clayton McHugh, of Hometown Real Estate and Auctioneer Company, Shawano; Mike and Mark Mitchell, of Mitchell Auctions, Bonduel; and Yoap and Yoap Auction, Pound. Sousek helps Hawks rally past New London

Recalling olden days at the fair
Some people ask me why I like the Shawano County Fair so much? I am not sure how to answer that, other than it was always what was done at the end of summer. I recall going as a child with my parents, walking through the barns and buildings, eating cotton candy, and being bug-eyed at all the strange and glorious things I saw. I remember when I was a teenager, my friend and I went to the fair one day.

Most people are kind
For the most part, there are many kind people in this world, although you’d never think it listening to the national news. I get a stab of pain in my heart when I hear of children being hurt, terrorized or even killed. “Can’t we all just get along?” I want to scream at the TV. Why innocent children must be the victims of sadistic adults who have distorted versions of what they think is the truth is mind-boggling to me.

Nonprofit Profile
The Caroline Aces 4-H Club has been in existence for 68 years. Gabrielle Will was the first general leader. Current leader Ellen Mehlberg gets help from her daughter, Rachel Ahlers. “Our club is fairly young,” said Mehlberg, who has been a leader for 34 years. Mehlberg teaches knitting, crocheting and sewing. She feels 4-H is a good way to learn skills and confidence. “You learn responsibility and speaking skills,” she said.

Kathryn Kugel is a member of the Waukechon Wildcats 4-H Club. She was born in Shawano, the daughter of Mary Lou and Chuck Kugel. She has an older brother and sister. Kugel lives in the town of Waukechon and will be a junior at Shawano Community High School.

Letter: Breastfeeding healthier for babies and moms
To the editor: I make milk – what’s your superpower? From Aug. 1-7, families everywhere celebrated World Breastfeeding Week. Breastfeeding is normal, healthy and efficient. Feeding a baby for the first year on formula can cost over $1,200; nursing is free. Breast milk has disease-fighting cells called antibodies that help protect infants from germs, illness and even sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
