There is something about the start of a new year that makes us think it is a clean slate. Humans think that with a new year, they can turn over a new leaf, just like they turned the calendar from 2014 to 2015. Unfortunately, while many resolutions are made, very few are kept for an extended period of time. I am sticking by my usual resolutions to eat healthier and to exercise more.

Wayne Klerus “Grandpa Moron” Uelman, 69, Green Bay, died peacefully Thursday, Jan. 1, 2015, at home after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Shawano on Sept. 4, 1945, he was the son of the late Klerus and Dorothy (Krause) Uelman. Wayne served in the United States Army. He worked at Green Bay Packaging until his retirement in 2007. Wayne was known for his sense of humor and love of salmon fishing.

The Wolf River Builders Association (WRBA) is giving away an “ice condo.” The organization is selling raffle tickets for the enhanced ice shanty. The winning ticket will be pulled Jan. 31 at Sunset Bar and Grill in Shawano. The ice condo will be available for public viewing during the American Legion fishing derby Jan. 17 at the Sunset Bar and Grill and on Jan. 31.

With weather forecasters predicting cold temperatures and dangerously cold wind chill starting Saturday night and Sunday, Shawano and Menominee counties and the Menominee tribal emergency management officials issued a reminder Friday about the dangers of severe cold. Mayor Lorna Marquardt will issue a proclamation next week in honor of National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day on Friday and is asking the Shawano community to join the city in showing their support. “There’s always been Law Enforcement Appreciation Day, and we’ve always tried to support the Police Department,” Marquardt said.

GIRLS BASKETBALL Bonduel 70 Suring 23 Jen Dowden scored a game-high 21 points for Bonduel on Friday at Suring. Dowden made eight field goals, including a 3-pointer in the third period, and also went 2-2 from the free-throw line. The Bears built a commanding 42-10 lead entering halftime, including 12 points from Dowden and six from Lexi Reinke, who ended the game with eight points.

The Menominee Indian High School girls basketball team remained undefeated Friday, earned a key Central Wisconsin Conference-10 win and advanced to the championship game of the Gresham Booster Club Holiday Tournament with a 49-22 win over Gresham.
