Maynard R. Sohr Jr.

Maynard R. Sohr Jr., 79, of Shawano, died unexpectedly while fishing on Aug. 13, 2015. Maynard was born on Nov. 29, 1935, in Shawano County to the late Maynard A. and Mildred (Westerfeld) Sohr Sr. Maynard graduated from Bonduel High School in 1953. On Jan. 30, 1960, he was united in marriage to Nancy Gilbertson. Maynard owned and operated his family’s farm in the town of Hartland for over 20 years before passing it on to his son in 1983.

Linda I. Bohm
Linda I. Bohm, 93, passed away Monday afternoon, Aug. 10, 2015, in Shawano. Services will be held on Monday, Aug. 17, 2015, at 11 a.m. at St. Jakobi Lutheran Church, town of Richmond. Pastor Travis Kleinschmidt will officiate. Interment will be in the St. Jakobi Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the church on Monday from 10 a.m. until the hour of service. A memorial fund has been established in her name for St.

Jim R. Brunker
Jim R. Brunker, 75, of Shawano, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2015. Jim was born on March 30, 1940, in Milwaukee, a son of the late Edward and Mary Brunker. He was raised on a farm in Brookfield, Wisconsin. On Aug. 12, 1961, Jim was united in marriage to Patricia Kranjec at Immaculate Heart Catholic Church in West Allis. Jim was a retired Teamster, having worked for several trucking companies.

ALL OF SHAWANO’S A STAGE
The Mielke Arts Center is buzzing from the activity of almost 40 munchkins. It’s questionable, however, whether they will still be munchkins by the time this week is over. Some of them could end up as flying monkeys, scarecrows or even wicked witches. The Shawano County Arts Council’s weeklong children’s theater workshop will conclude with a free public performance of “The Wizard of Oz” on Saturday.

Clintonville man collects fire trucks
Daryl Schroeder had a special reason why he wanted to purchase a FWD fire truck, but he didn’t know that acquiring one truck would lead to a whole collection. Schroeder’s father, David, had worked as an engineer for FWD for 42 years but had never driven an FWD truck, even though he had several opportunities to do so before his retirement.

A little bit of dewgrass
Few people find putting jam on burnt toast to be all that palatable. Put it on a stage and add some instruments and lyrics, though, and it’s not only digestible, but even a little bit of fun. Burnt Toast and Jam is a Leopolis-based band that doesn’t quite fit into any of the traditional genres like country or pop.

Downtown businesses introduce new event
Seeking a new way to showcase downtown Shawano, merchants are introducing some new outdoor attractions Saturday that borrow from a proven formula of mixing fun and business. The first annual Maxwell Street Day event will beckon shoppers with a combination of sidewalk sales, outdoor dining, live music and more. The festival-like event is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Nursing homes get Atrium name changes
Five years after Shawano County sold Maple Lane Health Care Center, the nursing home for senior citizens is under new ownership again. Atrium Health & Senior Living, based in New Jersey, has purchased the 66-bed operation from Rice Health Care Facilities Inc.

Menominee debate marijuana venture
Members of the Menominee Indian Tribe are splitting sharply over the tribe’s latest money-making idea: legalizing and selling marijuana. The tribe is holding a referendum next week on whether to legalize marijuana usage for medical and recreational purposes on the 350-square-mile reservation.
