Last year the Gillett Tigers played the best football the high school has ever seen. They finished in a three-way tie for second in the Marinette & Oconto Conference at 7-2, hosted their first home playoff game and advanced to the second round for the first time ever before losing to Almond-Bancroft. Coach Rick Kamps hopes to build on the most successful season in school history.

William P. “Bill” Scholar Sr., 75, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 13, 2015, in Shawano. William was born on Sept. 24, 1939, in Houghton, Michigan, to the late Lorraine Scholar. William spent his childhood in Michigan before moving to Wisconsin with his family. He eventually moved to Indiana where he lived for 20 years before returning to Shawano.

A driver killed in a weekend Shawano County wreck that also killed another motorist and injured three other people has been identified as a four-time convicted drunken driver. Tony Garvey, 42, of De Pere, who was last convicted in 2013, was driving a pickup truck that police believe crossed a centerline and collided with two other vehicles near Bonduel about 10:15 p.m.

GOLF Shawano girls placed 14th at Seymour meet The Shawano girls golf team began its season Friday at the Thunder Invitational at Crystal Springs Golf Course in Seymour. The Hawks placed 14th out of 16 teams with a score of 458. Sophomore Brianna Zook shot a 100, Julia Beck played in 106, Emily Smith shot a 124 and Gabby Krueger hit 128 for the Hawks. Fox Valley Lutheran won the meet with a team score of 350.

Two people were killed and three others were injured Friday night in a traffic collision on a two-lane road near Bonduel. The Shawano County Sheriff’s Department said the incident occurred on state Highway 47 when the driver of a pickup truck crossed the centerline and collided with a motorcycle and an SUV going in the opposite direction.
