Tuberculosis has returned to Shawano County after nearly 10 years and is stirring anxiety among residents fearful of a disease that is both contagious and deadly. More than 100 people crowded into the Tigerton Community Center on Wednesday to quiz health officials about a local man who is being treated in isolation for tuberculosis. It is Shawano County’s second confirmed case this year of a disease that had not previously turned up in the county

A quilt block from the Barn Quilts of Oconto County project is on display on the 4-H food stand at the Oconto County Fairgrounds at Zippel Park in Gillett. Last year, the fair held a quilt block contest, and Kati Raddatz won with her 4-H design. Raddatz has been a member of the Christy Brook 4-H Club for five years.

Oconto County Public Health reminds parents that summer is a great time to get their children and teens immunized. Public health recommends these immunizations for preteens and teens: hepatitis A, human papillomavirus (HPV) and meningococcal (meningitis). Hepatitis A is a serious liver disease caused by a virus. It is usually spread by consuming contaminated food or water.

Ray “Poogie” Trever Jr., 78, of Suring, passed away at home on Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2015. He was born in Hickory on July 4, 1937, to the late Raymond and Ardis (Saunders) Trever. Allen Miller, 71, of Gillett, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 15, 2015, in Green Bay. Allen was born on Dec. 16, 1943, in Oconto Falls to the late Walter and Anna (Konop) Miller Sr. After graduating from high school he joined the U.S. Army and served until he was honorably discharged. On Sept. 19, 1964, Allen was united in marriage to Norma Reed in White Clay Lake; together the couple had two children.

Marilyn M. Kunkel (Curtis), 83, Greenfield, died Aug. 14, 2015, with her daughters by her side. The daughter of the late Esther (Krause) and William Curtis was born on Nov. 3, 1931, in Gillett. She also attended Gillett High School. Marilyn enjoyed doing the laundry, canning, gardening, baking, the outdoors, church and her grandkids. She was a member of the American Legion in Gillett.

Barbara J. Kane (née Rabe), 82, King, passed away peacefully on Monday, Aug. 3, 2015. She was born in Milwaukee on Jan. 10, 1933, daughter of Gordon and Mildred (Hanson) Rabe. She married Leslie “Leo” J. Kane on Sept. 24, 1955, at Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Suring. Barbara was a 1951 graduate of Suring High School and 1954 graduate of Walther Memorial Hospital School of Nursing.
