County OKs new arts center lease

With a little negotiating, Shawano County has resolved its lease on the Mielke Arts Center for another five years. The County Board approved a new lease Wednesday that requires the Shawano County Arts Council to pay more of the utility bills and handle more property maintenance at the center. Hillside to hold open house
Hillside Assembly of God Church in Gillett will begin a new year of youth and children’s programs on Wednesday evenings, beginning with an open house at 6 p.m. Sept. 9. Prizes will be awarded, and hot dogs and ice cream will be served. Royal Rangers is a boys program for ages 3-11.

Koehne to host car seat event
People interested in learning how to safely install a child’s car seat are invited to a car seat event from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 19.at Koehne Buick Pontiac GMC in Oconto. Certified child passenger safety technicians will check car seats for safe installation, check car seats for recalls, answer questions and assist with the safe and correct installation of car seats. New car seats will be available for $55 and booster seats for $35.

Red Arrow to hold corn roast, ATV parade
Red Arrow will host its ninth annual corn roast and ATV parade Sept. 5 at Barb’s Valley Inn in Townsend. Barb’s Valley Inn, 18904 State Highway 32, Townsend, is the bar with the snowmobile and ATV on the roof. The event begins at 11 a.m. and is open to the public. Free sweet corn will be available all day, and there will be meat raffles, music and food. The activities, under cover of a big tent, will take place rain or shine.

Johnsons hold reunion at Prairie du Chien
The 43rd annual reunion of the Lars and Angeline Johnson family was held July 25 in Prairie du Chien, on the shores of the Mississippi River. The families of Wilma Valenta, Lars Johnson and Ronald Johnson were on the reunion committee this year, with Ronald Johnson’s family hosting. Sixty family members came by plane and car.

Gieses to be honored at Labor Day Parade
Descendants will honor the role of August and Ernestine Giese in the formation of the village of Suring 100 years ago with an entry in the Suring Labor Day parade. The Gieses emigrated from Germany to a 40-acre farm in Pulcifer, where they had blacksmith and wagon-making shops.

Magnin places 3rd in FFA contest
Oconto Falls High School FFA member Ally Magnin placed third in the state in a speaking event at the annual FFA convention in Madison. Magnin competed in the state Discussion Meet contest on June 16. She advanced to the state contest after competing in two qualifying contests at the district and sectional levels last winter and spring, against students from area schools.
