Smiling Otter Traders will return for the 26th year as a crafter at the 36th annual Shawano Folk Music Festival from Aug. 8-10 at Mielke Park.
The Otter Traders, who specialize in beadwork and custom woodburning, will be among the dozen crafters expected at the festival.
“It’s a good tie between folk music and crafts because some musicians are also artists,” said Becky Van Buren, coordinator of the festival’s craft committee.
There were seven vendors selling crafts in 2013.
“It goes up and down year to year,” Van Buren said. “(It) depends on the weather since it is an outdoor event and whether there is another event being held in the area.”
Local crafters will be on hand to showcase handmade jewelry and artwork.
“People tend to be attracted to the unusual crafts like Native American jewelry,” Van Buren said.
Linda Radomski, of Shawano, will be selling dream catchers, handpainted dishes and plastic canvas art.
Dream catchers have been part of Native American tradition for centuries and are designed to filter out dreams during sleep. They date back to pre-colonial times and were common among several Native American tribes.
Quilters Arlene Stucker and and Donna Bubolz, both of Pulaski, will each donate a quilt to be raffled off and demonstrate the art of quiltmaking in the lobby of the Mielke Theatre.
“They will bring in all the necessary equipment and be available all weekend long,” festival committee member Dori Jerger said.
