Rainy weather, followed by snow and cold, have slowed construction of a sports complex at Oconto Falls High School.
This fall’s whirlwind start to the 1,800-seat stadium and nine-mile track has slowed considerably but remains on schedule, according to Jerry Moynihan, OFHS athletic director and construction manager for the project.
“We’re still on track for what we wanted to get done for Thanksgiving,” he told the School Board on Nov. 10.
The irrigation system and well have been installed, and the field is seeded. Lighting is scheduled to be installed this week, and designs for a combination concession stand, press box and restrooms are being developed.
St. Louis Construction, of Lena, began work on the bleacher’s cement base on Monday, taking precautions because of the cold weather, according to Moynihan. St. Louis is a subcontractor of JW Industries, of Green Bay, whose $315,000 stadium seating proposal won the School Board’s nod in September.
The stadium, potentially ready for the 2015 football season, is being built with $1.1 million in referendum funds approved by voters in August. The sports complex is part of a $2.2 million referendum that also includes parking lot repaving at the district’s buildings and renovations of the parking lot and entrance at Abrams Elementary School.
The School Board on Nov. 10 reviewed five bids for the latex surface of the track before selecting the low bid of $80,250 submitted by Athletic Field Services Inc., of Genesee Depot. The company will apply a 1-inch latex surface and all lines and markings. The surface comes with a five-year warranty.
The work is scheduled to take place in early July, after the track is poured in early June. Both projects are weather dependent. The School Board is scheduled to select a contractor for the asphalt track in the spring.
