Gillett Public Library
The new Community Center facility, purchased by the Gillett Pubic Library in May, is getting closer to completion.
The library purchased the BMO Harris bank building next door through donations (no taxpayer money was used), and it is being converted into meeting room space for the community. There will be one large gathering place and three smaller meeting rooms once the project is done. A second bathroom is being added, and tile flooring will replace the carpeting.
“We hope to have the center open to the public by May of this year,” said Kay Rankel, library director. “It will be wonderful to have multiple meeting spaces so that several groups can meet at any given time. Our existing meeting room in the library is used extensively, and we currently have to turn groups away who want to use the space.”
The facility will also be available to other groups besides nonprofit organizations. Families will be able to rent the facility for parties, and businesses can rent the space for employee functions.
The kitchen space is larger than the one in the library’s existing meeting room. It contains a full-size refrigerator, a microwave-convection oven and a lot of counter space.
Eventually, the space in between the new Community Center and public library will be converted into a Community Square, which will be used throughout the year for various functions.
The library flooded the area this winter and created an ice skating rink for the community, and plans are under way for a downtown market this summer. This outdoor space will also be available to groups using the Community Center building.
