Ervin E. Wetzel

Ervin E. Wetzel departed this life May 21, 2019, at Shawano Health Services. He was born the fourth of five children to parents Henry and Katharina (Magewske) Wetzel in the Town of Gillett, Oconto County, on Aug. 24, 1919. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Gillett, and graduated from Gillett High School. He served during World War II in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945 with assignments in New Zealand, Australia, India, North Africa, Italy, West Africa, and Brazil. He graduated from Milwaukee Vocational School as a machinist apprentice and worked for Kerney & Trecker/Giddings & Lewis, Milwaukee his entire career until his retirement. Ervin particularly enjoyed round dancing and square dancing. He also made many trips back to northeast Wisconsin to visit friends and relatives and assist with farming activities. Ervin is survived by nephews Eugene Schultz, Shawano, and Allen (Mary) Schultz, Powell, Tennessee. Friends and relatives may call on the family on Friday, May 31, 2019, from 10-11 a.m. at Legacy Funeral Chapels, 108 E. Main St., Gillett. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. with Ervin’s grandnephew, Vicar Adam Schultz, officiating the service. Burial with full military honors will follow at Wanders Rest Cemetery, Gillett.
