The Shawano area Disabled American Veterans (DAV) is accepting applications for volunteer drivers to transport Shawano area veteran patients to and from their medical appointments at the VA clinics in northeast Wisconsin.
The DAV recently had two outstanding volunteers retire from their driving roles and are short staffed.
The DAV, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs (VA), offers daily complimentary trips for veterans with appointments at the John H. Bradley VA Outpatient Clinic in Appleton, the Milo C. Huempfner VA Health Care Center in Green Bay and the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center in Milwaukee.
The DAV program is operated entirely by volunteer personnel, and drivers volunteer on their time, and even one trip a month would be helpful for the 70-plus veterans transported on a regular basis.
The DAV will supply all vehicles, fuel cards, supplies and training for the drivers.
Volunteers do not need to be veterans but must have a clean driving record. Volunteer drivers can usually expect to work four to eight hours on days they commit to drive, depending on the number of patients and the destination of the appointment. The DAV operates exclusively to VA facilities in Appleton, Green Bay, and Milwaukee only.
