Crowley bests Hong in gubernatorial primary

U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany easily secured the Republican nomination in the Wisconsin governor’s race in the Aug. 11 primary, but assumed frontrunner for the Democrats state Rep. Francesca Hong narrowly lost her chance to go toe-to-toe with the current Congressman in a close race with Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley.

Arrest delays Jorgenson’s pre-trial hearing

Seymour man Collyn Jorgenson was due to appear before Shawano-Menominee County Circuit Court Judge Katherine Sloma for a final pre-trial hearing Aug. 11 in a reckless homicide case, but getting arrested the day before put a crimp in the court’s schedule.

Woman, 89, dies after rollover in Navarino

One person is dead following a single-vehicle rollover Aug. 10.

At 11:44 a.m., the Shawano County Dispatch Center received a report of a one-vehicle crash on Navarino Road in the Town of Navarino. Initial reports indicated the vehicle rolled over into the ditch, coming to rest on its roof with the driver still in the vehicle.

Mohican Pow Wow marks 50 years

Dozens of dancers take part in the 50th annual Mohican Pow Wow on Aug. 8 at Many Trails Campground, including a number of jingle dress dancers. A jingle dress is a traditional Native American and First Nations women’s regalia and prayer dress, widely known as a healing dress adorned with rows of rolled metal cones that create a distinctive tinkling sound during dancing.

 

An event to remember

Katie Daul, human development and relationships educator with the University of Wisconsin-Extension, chats with a guest during Memories in the Park. The Aug. 7 event at Franklin Park brought attention to the issues involving Alzheimer’s disease.

 

Music and fun fill up Mielke Park

Musicians have a wonderful time Aug. 8 at the Pond View Glen stage for the Shawano Folk Music Festival. The stage was hosted by the Green Apple Folk Music Society.

• Cassandra M. Hilliard, 36, Plainfield, pleaded no contest Aug. 3 to possession of methamphetamine. Judge William Kussel Jr. withheld sentencing and placed her on 18 months of probation with conditions.

• Brendan T. Hoover, 26, Wausau, pleaded no contest Aug. 4 to felony bail jumping. Kussel levied a fine and sentenced him to 180 days in county jail.
