Handyman offers assistance to senior citizens

Ben Thomas, of Shawano, understands the desires of older adults who want to keep living in their homes.

Sometimes, home maintenance and minor repairs get put on the back burner, either because the seniors can’t do the work themselves or they can’t afford to hire a contractor.

18% hike in police calls not all crime related

Police calls are up 18% compared with this time last year, but that doesn’t translate to more crime in the city of Shawano.

Police serve lunch at Eberlein Park

Officer Tyler Thornborrow flips burgers on the grill Aug. 4 at Eberlein Park for the Shawano Police Department’s Lunch in the Park program. Thornborrow also serves as one of the school resource officers for the city, so he’ll be focusing on Shawano’s schools once they reopen in September.

 

Bringing community, first responders together

A long line forms for children and adults alike to check out Eagle III, an air and ground medical transport for northeast Wisconsin, during National Night Out on Aug. 4 at Veterans Memorial Park in Pulaski. The helicopter landed shortly after 5 p.m. and was a big attraction at the event.

UW-Whitewater

Paige Abendroth, a native of Sobieski, whose major is business, is one of more than 400 student-athletes from UW-Whitewater who earned spots on the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Scholastic Honor Roll for the 2025-26 academic year. Students must have earned a 3.0 grade-point average or better on a 4.0 scale to be recognized.

Abendroth was a member of the softball team.

Menominee County seeks to develop land

Menominee County has a piece of land about 1½ acres in size that it wants to utilize, and it’s turning to residents to determine what will be the best use for the property.

City, county housing authorities won’t merge

Members of the boards governing the Shawano city and county housing authorities have opted not to merge together — at least not now.

Todd Buettner is planning to retire in the next several months as the executive director of the Shawano City Housing Authority, which led some at the Housing Authority of Shawano County to consider a merger of the two organizations.
