Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2119 in Suring has announced it is working with children in grades 6-8 to participate in the Patriot’s Pen youth essay contest.
Each year, thousands of children enter the Patriot’s Pen youth essay contest sponsored by the VFW for a chance to win their share of nearly $1 million in state and national awards. Each first-place state winner receives a minimum of $500 at the national level, and the national first-place winner wins $5,000.
VFW Post 2119 is working with the Suring schools, but all children in grades 6-8 are eligible through their local post. Home schoolers are also encouraged to apply.
The application form is available online at www.vfw.org/community/youth-and-education/youthscholarships, and look for Patriot’s Pen on the page. This year’s theme is: “My Voice in American Democracy.”
The essay contest encourages young minds to examine America’s history, along with their own experiences in modern American society, by drafting a 300- to 400-word essay, expressing their views based on a patriotic theme chosen by the VFW commander-in-chief. Before submitting an essay, participants should be sure to download the form available at the website. Deadline is midnight Oct. 31.
