National statistics reveal 25% of female students do not have adequate access to feminine hygiene products. This startling reality prompted a team of 35 volunteer employees from Bellin Health Oconto Hospital and surrounding Bellin Health clinics to launch of the No Girl Without campaign in 2022, with a goal of providing period products to 25% of the local teenage girl population.
The overwhelming success of the first campaign inspired the team to continue its efforts, now in its third year.
No Girl Without volunteers have secured at least 120 donation locations for 2024 throughout Marinette, Menominee, Oconto and Forest counties in Wisconsin and Menominee County, Michigan, for this year’s campaign. The campaign is assisting 28 schools, two shelters, three food pantries, several community resource locations and a group home.
Schools are requesting female hygiene products such as sanitary pads, panty liners, tampons, feminine wash, body wash, deodorant and hygiene wipes. The schools have also requested items for the male students, such as deodorant and unisex products such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, combs, brushes and shampoo.
The impact of period poverty on teens can lead to a host of physical and emotional challenges, from depression and anxiety to infections and school truancy. By providing essential menstrual products, the team aims to create happier, healthier and more secure students.
Looking ahead, Bellin Health is exploring the possibility of expanding the initiative regionwide to assist even more counties in northeast Wisconsin and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Plans are in place to continue collecting donations year-round at Bellin Oconto Hospital and online through the Bellin Health website.
