A grandfather’s love of John Deere tractors inspired the cake that brought the highest bid at the Shawano County Fair cake auction Friday at the fairgrounds.
Kayla Jung, a freshman at Marion High School, baked the cake, and her grandfather, Bill Bowers, submitted the winning bid.
Bowers chuckled and said the John Deere-themed funfetti cake was Kayla’s idea.
“We have a lot of tractors on our farm and we only like green,” Bowers said.
The second highest bid was $540, for a chocolate golden swirl cake by Allison Brown, of Angelica.
“It is pretty cool with her being the highest bid,” said Kayla’s father, Edgar, who noted she put a lot of work into the cake.
Jung, who has been a member of the Pella Eagles 4-H Club for eight years, brought a cake to the auction for a third time.
She said the most difficult part of making her cake was creating the frosting from scratch.
Bids on the 47 cakes in the auction ranged from $45 to Bowers’ $600.
Terri Brunner, Shawano County University of Wisconsin-Extension 4-H program assistant, said the cake auction has been part of the fair since 1994.
“We have gradually grown over the years,” she said.
Winners receive 95 percent of the money raised, with the remainder going to Shawano County 4-H.
Jung plans to put her winnings into a savings account to continue her education after high school.
“These kids work really hard all year,” Brunner said. “There is a lot of work that goes toward this, including techniques.”
