Oconto Falls eye clinic closing

As announced last spring, BayCare Clinic Eye Specialists is closing its Oconto Falls location at year’s end. After serving the Oconto Falls area since 1985, the clinic and optical center at 323 E. Highland Drive, Suite 8, is scheduled to close on Dec. 29.
GOP opens Oconto HQ
The Republican Party of Oconto County has opened a new headquarters at 109 Congress St., Oconto. The office is scheduled to be open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, 4-6 p.m. Wednesday and 9-11 a.m. Saturday. The public is invited. Signs, tumblers and pins are for sale.
Packers survive scare from Panthers, 33-30
Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young was unable to get a snap off as the Panthers found themselves in field goal range as the game clock ticked to zero in Charlotte on Christmas Eve. Down 30-22, the Carolina Panthers took over at their own 30-yard line with 5:47 left in the game. Eight yards came out of the first two plays, before Young connected with receiver D.J. Chark for 20 yards.

Landfill closure date approved
Shawano County is getting out of the landfill business. The Shawano County Board on Dec. 20 approved a resolution approving the closure of Unit 5 of Phase 2 of the Shawano Landfill at the end of 2025.
Attorney shortage slows Noriega-Avila case
Justice is still on hold in a sexual assault case as Pedro Noriega-Avila continues to wait for an attorney through the public defender’s office. Regis M. Westphal
Regis Marie Westphal, 96, went home to her Lord on Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2023, at Woodlands Senior Park in Fond du Lac. Regis Marie Raaths was born at home on the farm July 13, 1927, in the Town of Angelica, first daughter of Harold and Marie (Kroening) Raaths. Dr. Shippy was the attending physician. Regis was baptized Aug. 7, 1927, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Zachow, and confirmed there on July 28, 1940, by Pastor A. Habermann.
Jerry J. Becker
Jerry Joseph Becker, 85, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2023, in Shawano. Jerry was born Dec. 16, 1938, in Shawano to the late Joseph and Amthilda (Priem) Becker. On Oct. 1, 1977, he was united in marriage to Patti Kmecheck at St. Michael Catholic Church in Suring. He worked as a dairy farmer for most of his life before driving bus. In Jerry’s free time, he enjoyed driving his red golf cart, pontoon boat and boating on Big Lake in Gresham.
County deputies get new 3-year contract
Shawano County deputies will begin the new year with a new three-year contract with the county, following approval of the deal by the county board Dec. 20. Updates and revisions to the collective bargaining agreement primarily related to wages and retirement contributions. The contract includes a 7% pay raise in 2024 for patrol officers and detectives.
