Now the time to consider flood insurance

One inch of water can lead to thousands of dollars in damage to a home or business, so local and state officials encourage owners and renters to consider flood insurances. Most homeowners and renters insurance policies do not cover flood damage, and on average, 40% of National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) flood insurance claims occur outside of high-risk flood areas.
WRLHS gets grant to educate about opioids
Wolf River Lutheran High School is sounding the alarm about the opioid crisis and how, even in Shawano County, the drug problem has taken hold. The school recently received a $5,000 grant from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction to educate students and the community about drugs in general with an emphasis on opioids.
Crack sealing, microsurfacing bids approved
Street projects have already been determined for the city of Shawano for 2024, but the Shawano Common Council signed off on spending nearly $100,000 to help keep the streets not being rehabilitated going for just a little longer. The council approved a $46,810 bid from Fahrner Asphalt Sealers for microsurfacing work, the lower of two bids submitted.
Plea deal offered to Noriega-Avila
A plea offer is in the hands of attorneys representing Pedro Noriega-Avila, they told Shawano-Menominee County Circuit Court Judge William Kussel Jr. on Feb. 14, but they need some time to decide whether to accept it or proceed to trial. Kussel granted the request and set a new hearing for 3 p.m.

Carthage College Claire Guenther of Shawano studied Spanish Language Immersion in Costa Rica with Carthage College during its J-Term, a month-long period to explore subject areas. A Carthage tradition since the early 1970s, J-Term, or January Term, study tours allow students to experience new cultures and ideas without committing to a full semester abroad.
Area boys hockey teams’ postseason play ends
Waupaca 4, Antigo 2 A pair of goals in the last minutes of play ended the season for the Antigo Red Robins boys hockey team on Feb. 15. The No. 5 seeded Red Robins, a co-op team with Wittenberg-Birnamwood, lost 4-2 to No. 4 seed Waupaca in the WIAA Division 2 Sectional 2 regional round. The Comets opened the game with a goal in the first period another in second to take a 2-0 lead.
