Webster named CMN Student of the Year

Chenoa Webster has been chosen as the College of Menominee Nation’s Student of the Year. She received an associate degree in early childhood education from CMN in May 2023 and is continuing to work toward her bachelor’s degree in elementary/middle school education. Webster has always had a passion for working with children and youth development.
Wrestlers prepare for state tournament
Shawano’s Drake Herm will represent the Hawks at the boys state wrestling tournament this weekend at the Kohl Center in Madison. At the sectionals in Kimberly on Feb. 17, Herm battled in the finals match but lost 14-0. In his wrestle back, he pinned Ryan Schmidt of Kaukauna in 42 seconds to qualify for the state tournament. His first match was set for the afternoon of Feb.
Lena’s perfect conference records comes to an end
Friday, Feb. 16 Gillett Gillett improved to 10-6 in the Marinette & Oconto Conference with a 55-15 victory over St. Thomas Aquinas Academy. It is the third conference win in a row for Gillett, 14-9 overall. Lena defeats Suring Returning to the win column in the Marinette & Oconto Conference, Lena defeated Suring 77-47. Lena (15-1, 22-2) lost its only conference game to Coleman earlier but still remains in first place.
Carlson returns as interim Gillett superintendent for a month

School bus driver shortage intensifies
With an ongoing shortage of available drivers, the Oconto Falls School District is faced with the possibility it will have to further curtail bus service to its students. “We have a very tenured team in our transportation group. Two of those folks let me know they plan to retire at the end of the 2023-24 school year,” Superintendent Dean Hess reported to the school board at its Feb. 12 meeting.

One ice fishing derby off, one on
One side effect of the warmer than normal winter is that a number of annual events that revolve around ice fishing have been canceled or modified this year. As of Feb. 19, however, the Finnegan Lake Walleye Club was still promoting its annual ice fishing derby, with registration taking place at Zippel Park in Gillett from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb.
