The Wittenberg-Birnamwood School District did not have to look very far to find a new principal to preside over Birnamwood Elementary-Middle School. The Wittenberg-Birnamwood School Board voted unanimously June 24 to promote Chris Kulas, who finished the past school year as a third-grade teacher at Birnamwood.

Wittenberg’s Art Park is home to a new rustic metal sculpture that depicts three cranes in flight above a dense stand of cattails. Installed in May, “Taking Flight” was created by Vic Rouleau.

A Daubert hearing has been scheduled for July 10 to determine if an expert witness will be allowed to testify for the state against Pedro Noriega-Avila, who faces charges of sexual assault of a child and incest. At a final pre-trial hearing June 24, defense attorneys Joe Furnstahl and James Schoenecker filed a motion to exclude the witness and thought the Daubert hearing would be that day, according to online court records.

Bart and Sue Mattson, owners of Papa Murphy’s Take ’N’ Bake Pizza stores in Shawano and Antigo, announced their plans to retire and sell both stores. The Shawano store is located at 1063 E. Wisconsin egg production during May was 204 million eggs, down 7% from the previous May, according to the latest Chickens and Eggs report from the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. The average number of all layers on hand during May was 7.83 million, down 6% from last year. Eggs per 100 layers for May was 2,609, down 1% from a year ago. United States egg production totaled 9.10 billion during May, down 2% from last year.
