Court ruling muddles civil suits prompted by homicide

Two civil suits seeking damages against the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department following the murder of a Wittenberg man last year were complicated this week by a court ruling allowing the convicted murderer to also be named as a defendant. Joshua P. Johnson, 23, was committed in December to life in a mental institution for killing his father, Donald P. Johnson, 53, at their Wittenberg home on Feb. 21, 2012.
Shawano Lake district water rates rising
Water rates in Shawano Lake Sanitation District No. 1 are going up about 14 percent. The district serves about 2,274 residential accounts along Shawano Lake in four municipalities. The Wisconsin Public Service Commission on Thursday issued a new rate order for the district, which had not sought a major rate increase since 1999.
Shakespeare classic coming to SCHS stage
Shawano Community High School is dusting off a classic for its fall drama production, which opens Thursday. Director Mark Otte, who teaches English and theater at SCHS, is turning back to the bard, also known as William Shakespeare, as his students prepare to present the tragedy “Romeo and Juliet.” “I like doing Shakespeare about every three years,” Otte said.
Some jobs can wait
I remember last winter, and how the snow and sleet, and mess, just seemed to come. Each time I would drive my van into the garage, the snow would melt off of it and make the floor a muddy mess. It was muddy simply because there was so much dirt on the floor. What’s more, the dirt would stick to my shoes and it would get tracked into the house. I vowed that I would clean the garage as soon as it warmed up.

Sweet October
Eighteen years ago this month God blessed us with our daughter. It’s quite suitable that our only girl be born smack dab in the middle of my most favorite season of the year. The earthy smells, the brisk air, the majestic fall colors all bring that time back with a sweet ache. She was quite the surprise, coming to us after 16 years of marriage, following the adoption of her two older brothers.

Young Chargers surprise
While the journey wasn’t perfect, the record is. After seven conference games, the Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School volleyball team has a perfect 7-0 record in the Central Wisconsin Conference-8 as the team prepares to host half of the CWC-8 tournament Saturday. That is in part because of the most surprising attribute of the young team: an ability to come from behind to pull out wins. “When we’re down — we kind of play like a roller coaster — we
Bears dominate homecoming game
It might have been the last time the seniors on the Bonduel High School football team step foot on Rush Niles Memorial Field as players. It was also homecoming. If that wasn’t enough, the Bears were fighting for a playoff spot. With all that was on the line, Central Wisconsin Conference-8 foe Stevens Point Pacelli (2-6, 1-5 CWC-8) never had much of a chance Friday night.
