Gary Roy Abendroth, 59, Beaver Dam, died peacefully on Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013, after a short battle with cancer with his loving wife at his side every step of the way. Gary was born in Appleton on Oct. 27, 1953, to Paul F. and Adele M. (Vandenberg) Abendroth. He served his country honorably in the United States Army from 1973-1979. Gary had also enjoyed being a disc jockey for 16 years with his best friend, Jeff Cole.

Irene Leonia Pevonka, 80, of Shawano, passed away surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013, at a local nursing home. Born on Oct. 28, 1932, in Naperville, Ill., she was the daughter of the late George H. and Elsie (Rowoldt) Grandt. At a very early age the family lost their home to a fire, so Irene and her sister, Laverne, had to live with friends.

Menominee Indian High School The Menominee Indian High School had its first parent/teacher conferences of the year on Thursday. Many parents came in to see how their student is doing. The PBIS team had an incentive for those parents who attended. For each teacher the parents visited, they received a ticket to put into a drawing at the end of the night for an iPad. The lucky winner was Terri Wynos.

Hawks second at Lakeland invite The Shawano Community High School volleyball team took second place Saturday at the Lakeland Invitational in Minocqua. Shawano beat Phillips 2-1 and Lakeland 2-1, and lost to Wausau Newman 3-0. Erika Dunnam had 21 kills, 49 digs and six aces in the tournament. Haley Going had 73 digs and four aces. Peyton Going had 12 kills.

The Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School volleyball team remained undefeated as it rolled to a Central Wisconsin Conference-8 title Tuesday, defeating Weyauwega-Fremont 3-0 in the final game of pool play. Wittenberg-Birnamwood (10-0 CWC-8) won 25-11, 25-17, 25-23. Micah Nier had 11 kills nine digs and three aces. Taylor Bushman had 11 kills and 12 digs. Taylor Nier had six kills and 15 digs.

Four goals from Scott Cerveny and relentless offense helped lift the No. 3 Gresham/Bowler high school boys soccer team to a 7-1 victory over No. 6 Northland Lutheran in Tuesday’s WIAA Division 4 regional tournament match in Gresham.
