Don’t make the mistake of assuming the Bonduel High School girls basketball team, despite having only two seniors, is inexperienced. The team has three players with starting experience, including Jen Dowden, a 5-foot-11 junior who is a third-year starter and was a first-team all-Central Wisconsin Conference-8 selection last year. Dowden led the team with 181 points (12.9 points per game), was second in the conference in rebounding (8.6 per game)

The Bonduel High School wrestling team opened its season splitting a double dual Tuesday at Wittenberg-Birnamwood. Bonduel beat Gillett/Suring 59-12 and lost to 52-18 to Coleman, ranked No. 2 in the state in Division 3 by Crossface Magazine. Against Gillett/Suring, Bonduel’s Travis Wollenberg (132 pounds) pinned Austin Perkins in 1 minute, 3 seconds. Sam Kroening (152) pinned Mitchel Umentum in 5:19. Dan Tauchen (160) pinned Colin Weiss in 1:30.

After a sluggish start, the Bonduel High School girls basketball team pulled away from Suring in the fourth quarter to get a 58-41 win to open the season. The Bears fell behind 12-6 in the first quarter, but improved defense and a trio of 3s from Deanna Zernicke, a 5-foot-6 junior guard, helped lift Bonduel to a 18-18 tie at halftime. “We’ve been sitting back with 34 girls in practice playing nice,” Bonduel coach Missy Dowden.

Grosskopf Bus Company will be owned by Johnson Bus Company as of Jan. 1, the owners of both companies told the Shawano School Board on Monday. Scott Grosskopf broke the news on Nov. 11 that he planned to sell his company after more than 40 years of service to Shawano school children.

At least one seat on the Shawano County Board will be open when the spring election rolls around in April. District 5 Supervisor Sandy Steinke said she is not seeking re-election. Her district includes Wards 9 and 10 in the city of Shawano. “I have a new job, and with my new employer, my hours don’t coincide with County Board time,” she said.

A Shawano County committee Tuesday recommended moving forward with a long-awaited wage and classification study in hopes of having a contract approved by the County Board this month and the study completed before the April elections. Helen J. St. Louis, 82, of Lena (Kelly Lake), died Friday, Nov. 29, 2013, at Sharpe Care Nursing Home, Oconto Falls. She was born to the late William and Agnes (Vondross) Houska on Oct. 17, 1931.
