Forecast indicates when to spread manure

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) is reminding farmers and manure applicators to check the runoff risk advisory forecast before spreading manure on fields. Syrup from maple trees better for health
This March morning, the sun is taking its time climbing over the horizon. The flowage is glistening, covered in a new sheet of ice formed by recently melted snow that has frozen to form a huge ice rink. It is a spectacular sunrise, breathtakingly beautiful.

Northern flickers bringing their songs to state
It’s mid-March, the time of year when those winds from the balmy south send many of the migrating songbirds our way, soon to show up in our backyards and surrounding landscapes. One of our favorite woodpeckers to watch for is the Northern flicker. We usually just catch sight of it as it seemingly makes a mad dash through our backyard. Its low, undulating flight pattern is a key giveaway for this species.

Medical exam ordered for Renel after NGI plea

County wants more state money for courts
Shawano County is joining several others from around the state asking the governor and state legislature for more money to operate the circuit court system. In 2023, the total cost to Wisconsin counties for running all circuit courts was $237 million.

Local housing program oversight closing down
A local revolving loan program to improve housing in Shawano County will be closing down, with residents being sent north to apply for funds. “It’s kind of ironic, because last month we had a presentation from MSA about the whole program, and then we received communication that the program will be closing down,” Carrie Buntjer, county finance director, told the executive committee March 19.

Dairy farming stays in family for Strassburgs
Dairy farming is part of Jeff Strassburg’s DNA. The same can be said for his family — wife Jeni, son Jake Strassburg and daughter Alyssa Schmidt — who own and operate Strassburg Creek Dairy near Bowler.
