I watch “Wheel of Fortune” to convince myself how smart I am; I watch “Jeopardy!” to prove how little I know about a lot of categories to teach me humility. How do those people have so much trivial information stashed in their craniums? Or is it crania? And why do they have it in there? Remember Ken Jennings?

It seems spring weather showed up before the official start of spring this year, and it was an unwelcome advent for those who tap maple trees.

There’s a lot of great basketball being played right now. As I write this, the Wisconsin Badgers have just been crowned Big Ten champions and, as a result, have secured a No. 1 seed in the west region of the NCAA Tournament. From what I’ve read, this is the first time in program history they have accomplished that feat. Good for them! We are a basketball and, really, all-sport family.

Paul and Sue Hintz volunteer at the American Legion Post 117 in Shawano. Paul is a Shawano native, graduating from Bonduel High School. He worked for North Country Homes, then tended bar before going to work at Packerland Packing. Paul worked at the former T&C grocery, followed by going to school and working as an auto mechanic.

Lions Club members are dedicated to helping their communities. Cecil Lions Club charter member Dave Bahr is an excellent example of that dedication. “The community is always first,” Bahr said. “I just enjoyed the camaraderie and what it meant to help people in the community.” The club was chartered in 1973 under the sponsorship of the Bonduel Lions Club. Bahr said the club started with 25 members.

To the editor: The recent right-to-work decision by anti-labor union forces in Madison shows how well unionism does work. It took a united bonding of all Republican state legislators to suppress unionism at the workplace by standing together in total solidarity. Oh sure, both sides practice unionism to get things done. Everywhere you go there is unionism of a sort. What would sports teams do without united action?

To the editor: News flash: A cat is out of the bag! It was reported to the Common Council at their meeting Monday, March 16, that Clintonville owes $1 million in unfunded retirement benefits. Acting City Administrator Chuck Kell made this announcement that our city is near the top of the list of delinquents. What is worse is the interest charges are adding thousands of dollars to the debt, with the state charging 7 percent interest.

To the editor: I am a local sportsman who is greatly concerned about some of the conservation issues in the proposed state budget. The governor’s budget makes the Natural Resources Board an advisory council rather than the official decision-making body for the Department of Natural Resources. Sportsmen and women many years ago fought to have a citizen board over the DNR to minimize political decision-making in the DNR.
