In June, youths from across Wisconsin gathered at the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus for the annual Summer Academy event, hosted by UW-Madison Extension’s Positive Youth Development Institute and 4-H. Youths had the opportunity to build and learn skills to reach goals and plan for the future. Youth participants explored careers, college and other topics of interest through interactive workshops.

Summer is in full swing, and in Wisconsin, that often means spending as much time as possible outdoors. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer. With 20% of Americans developing the disease by age 70, it’s a serious concern. “We want to make sure that everyone applies sunscreen year-round, not just during the warmer summer months,” said Dr. Glenn Vogelsang with ThedaCare.

Work has begun in earnest on the Oconto County budget for 2025, with the county board’s approval July 18 of the annual budget guidance letter. The county is working its way through a 2024 budget that features $50,157,268 in expenditures and a county property tax levy of $22,061,436.

State Sen. Eric Wimberger, R-Green Bay, has been honored by the Wisconsin Counties Association with a WCA Outstanding Legislator Award for his work on behalf of county government during the 2023-2024 Legislative Session. “Sen. Wimberger has been a valuable partner to counties, not only in the 30th Senate District, but for all of Wisconsin,” said WCA President and CEO Mark O’Connell.

Hofa Park 16, Navarino 5 Brinton Anderson collected three hits in four at bats, as the Hofa Park Panthers defeated the Navarino Rangers 16-5 on July 28 at Hofa Park. Anderson doubled in the third inning and singled in the first and third innings. The Panthers scored nine runs in the third inning on the way to victory.

In the IMCA modifiers feature at the Shawano Speedway on July 27, Shawano’s Jordan Bartz moved up from starting 10th to take the checkered flag. Tigerton’s Wyatt Block, who started one spot in front of Bartz, finished one spot behind at the end. Seymour’s Chuck Carmin placed third. Wausau’s Kevin Feck won the first heat after starting in third place.

Ahead of the Wisconsin primary Aug. 13, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is reminding U.S. citizens how to obtain identification, free of charge, that is valid for voting. Valid identification for voting purposes, for those who will be at least 18 years of age by the next election, includes a driver license, identification card, military or student identification card, etc.

July 25 Deputies responded to 26 incidents, including harassment on West Shore Drive in the Town of Mountain, a disturbance on South Green Bay Avenue in Gillett, an incident at the Oconto County Jail, 220 Arbutus Ave.
