Oconto County is the fastest-growing county in Northeast Wisconsin, according to an analysis in the 2024 Business News Book of Lists. The northern Oconto County Town of Doty recorded the most building permits for new one- and two-family dwellings amoung the 12 Northeast Wisconsin counties, with a total of 135 permits. A handful of local organizations are the recipients of grants from the Green Bay Packers Foundation. The foundation recently announced it has distributed $1.5 million in annual grants to 398 civic and charitable groups throughout the state of Wisconsin. Of the foundation’s contributions, 54 grants – aggregating $210,550 – were awarded to Brown County organizations.

Lisa Sherman, Oconto County’s longtime finance director, has announced she plans to retire in February. Sherman’s retirement letter was read to supervisors at the county board’s regular monthly meeting Nov. 21. Her last day of employment will be Feb. 3. “It is with mixed feelings that I would like to announce my upcoming retirement,” Sherman said.

The city of Gillett and Gillett School District are close to an agreement for a pilot school resource officer program in the schools. The resource officer would be stationed on school property to interact daily with students.

When I finished reading “Bluff” by Jane Stanton Hitchcock, I wondered how I could ever share it here. The plot was beyond complicated but very intriguing. I will try to give you a summary and hope it inspires you to read one of Hitchcock’s other books. The story centers around Maud Warner. As part of New York’s wealthy elite, she and her brother grew up with every privilege.

The College of Menominee Nation (CMN) intends to purchase the Menominee Tribal Office Building at N3522 Cottage Ave., Neopit. The building, a 10,500-square-foot wood log construction, has been historically owned and occupied by Menominee Tribal Enterprises for administrative purposes.
