Jan. 24 Gillett 63, Niagara 60 Behind the dominating shooting of Jesse DeBauch, Gillett jumped out to a 28-22 halftime lead and held on for a slim 63-60 win over Niagara. DeBauch had a double-double with 33 points and 11 rebounds. He also had five assists and two steals. Jed Herzog scored 11 points, pulled down seven rebounds and had one steal. Ryan Pensis also had a double-double, scoring 10 points and leading the Tigers with 12 rebounds.

Jan. 25 Bay Area 3 ECA 1 Faye Brunke scored twice in the first period and Hannah Von Haden added a third in the second period as Bay Area topped the ECA (Eau Claire Area) Stars 3-1. Both of Brunke’s goals were solo shots. Von Haden had assists from Tiana Stindt and Abby Mommaerts. ECA scored its only goal at 1:35 in the third. Bay Area had 32 shots on goals, forcing Stars goalie Amy Thul into 29 saves.

Jan. 24 Bonduel Invite Shawano’s girls wrestling team placed third among several schools at the Bonduel Invitational. Adalyn Barkley placed first, while pinning all of her opponents. “She is really wrestling well lately and looks to keep things going as we move closer to regionals,” coach Mike Homan said. Gwyn Hermann also wrestled well and took second in the 107-pound bracket.

Winter sports are a great way to embrace the season, but they come with unique risks — one of the most common being traumatic brain injuries (TBI), particularly concussions. “In sports like hockey, skiing and snowboarding, you’re moving fast, and concussions happen more often than people realize,” said Dr. Joseph Benert, Aspirus sports medicine physician.

The Wittenberg Area Historical Society hopes to create something new to preserve the past. For more than 50 years, its museum has been the schoolhouse built by St. Paul Lutheran Church in 1904. When the society purchased the property, the stated intent was to preserve the landmark building in its original one-room schoolhouse design.

Jan. 23 Bonduel 61, Iola-Scandinavia 58 Race Anvelink hit a half-court shot as time expired as Bonduel beat Iola-Scandinavia 61-58. Bonduel remains unbeaten at 15-0 overall this season. Ryan Westrich led the Bears with 18 points.

Jan. 23 Shawano 39, New London 38 Shawano boys wrestling coach Mike Homan told his team New London would be a tough opponent as the Bulldogs have some heavy hitters. The night was going to be a constant uphill battle before Shawano pulled off a 39-38 victory to remain unbeaten at 5-0 in conference action. Shawano started the night with a major decision at 150 by Kody Popelka.
