Prior to the start of the school year, Steve Huisman, principal at Suring School, answered a few questions about his new position. Q Why did you want to be principal of Suring School? A Personally, becoming Suring’s principal is a great professional development opportunity for me. Even better, the move is a return to northern Wisconsin—a great place to raise a family. Michael R. Abler, 53, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013, at his home. He was born on March 6, 1960, in Sheboygan, the son of the late Arthur Abler and Martina (Halbach) Abler, Wittenberg. On Feb. 17, 1979, Mike was united in marriage to Wanda Brenecke in Chilton. She survives. Mike and Wanda owned and operated Northwoods Sporting and Nursery in Birnamwood. Mike loved to work on cars and race cars, to hunt and to spend time with his friends.

Manawa wins Marion Invitational Manawa High School was a perfect 5-0 at the Marion Volleyball Invitational Friday in Marion. Tigerton was second with a record of 3-2. Wisconsin Valley Lutheran also went 3-2 to finish third.

Teagan Monfils finished sixth with a time of 16 minutes, 32 seconds, and the Shawano Community High School girls cross-country team finished 10th at the Terror Invitational at Pierce Park in Appleton. Shawano had a team score of 287. Kimberly (38) took first. The SCHS boys team finished eighth with a team score of 214. Jake Klister led the team, finishing 17th overall with a time of 18 minutes. Championship Night at the Shawano Speedway during the Shawano County Fair is always a fun event. The carnival-like atmosphere is something special. Many fans make a once-a-year trek to the track on fair night as well. With one night remaining, Abrams racer “Rocket” Ron Berna has a chance to make history. Berna currently has a nine-point lead over defending track champion Nick Anvelink.

With the exit of a large and talented group of seniors, the young Shawano Community High School girls volleyball team is going to rely on height and defense this year. “I didn’t know what to expect,” Shawano coach Jean Wolf said. “I graduated a lot of seniors.

Through two games, the Shawano Community High School football team has yet to find the end zone and has been on the losing end of two ugly scores. But first-year coach Al Tomow said his team continues to play hard, even if it doesn’t show on the scoreboard. “I’m proud of my team, that they don’t quit. That they play hard for each other and for our staff,” Tomow said. “We knew what we signed up for.

To the editor: I am writing in regard to Anello’s petting zoo. Just because some dumb kid can’t read, she has caused all this trouble for Rita. I’ve watched this zoo grow from a few chickens, rabbits, geese and goats to include a camel, zebras, llamas, kangaroos, parrots, etc. I think the zoo is an asset to Shawano. The cages and yards are well kept, and the animals are healthy.
