After paranormal things began happening at Holt and Balcom Logging Camp, I asked our curator, Bob Brown, if he’d experienced anything similar. Bob said he hadn’t, but he said he believed that spirits do walk among us. Except for the story I am about to relate, I haven’t seen the invisible guests taking up residence in the museum. But I feel and welcome their comforting presence.

Trees provide many benefits to the environment and our health and well-being. These long-lived members of our landscapes and communities provide shade, help reduce energy costs, clean the air we breathe, prevent soil erosion and stormwater runoff, and attract and provide homes for birds and pollinators.

To the editor: Millions of Americans could be forced to jump through new hoops just to cast a ballot next year if the U.S. Senate passes the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act. The House of Representatives has already passed this act. Wisconsin voters must presently show a legal ID to vote, but this bill would additionally require proof of citizenship. This is a dangerous step toward voter suppression.
