Velda L. A. Olson, 90, of Embarrass, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2015, at Theda Clark Medical Center in Neenah.
Velda was born on March 4, 1924, in the town of Pella, Shawano County, as the daughter of the late Paul and Adelia (Dordel) Gruetzmacher Sr. As a young child, Velda moved with her family to Embarrass, where she has resided ever since. She was united in marriage to Floyd “Mike” Olson on Dec. 4, 1942, in Embarrass.
During the 1960s, Velda worked at the Hanson Glove Factory in Clintonville for a number of years aside from raising their six children. She was a faithful member of Zion Lutheran Church in Embarrass, where she volunteered as a member of the Ladies Aid. Velda also served her community as a past treasurer for the Embarrass River Conservation Club, a member of the VFW Post 664 Women’s Auxiliary, assisted with various activities involving the Embarrass Fire Department, and also helped clean the village hall.
Mike preceded his wife in death on June 4, 1980. More recently, Velda moved to the Pinewood Apartments in Embarrass, where she enjoyed socializing with friends and neighbors. Some of her favorite pastimes were gardening, fishing, playing Bingo, and working on word search or jigsaw puzzles.
Survivors include her children and their families, Judy (Don) Fields, their son Robert (Sue) Fields and children Natalie and Kaitlyn, their daughter Lynne (Gregg) Krause and children Jacob and Kelly; Joanne (Gerald) Desens, their son Jeffrey (Lisa) Desens and children Brynn and Carsen, their son Jeffrey (Debra) Hietpas and children Jessica and Nick, their son Brian (Leah) Desens and children Jack, Sam and Emma; Jane (Ron) Jokipii, their daughter Christine (Al) Bolwerk, their son Kevin Jokipii and children Riley, Allyson and Ross; Jean (Ed) Brockman, their son Patrick Schoenheide; James Olson, daughter Wendy Degner and daughter Sherry Huntington and children Brice, Breanne, Brooke, Bronson and Brynne, daughter Kelly (Todd) Hoffman and children Hunter and Hilary; Janice Bleck, son Troy (Tracy) Bleck and children Dylan and Tony, daughter Erica (Mike) Magee, and son Eric M. (Megan) Bleck and children Eric H., Jordan and Jaden; her brother, Paul (Marie) Gruetzmacher Jr.; and numerous other relatives and friends.
Velda was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Mike; daughter-in-law, Pansy Olson; sisters, Duaine and June; and brothers; Vilas and Melvin.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, Feb. 28, 2015, at 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Embarrass with the Rev. Todd Jerabek officiating. Inurnment will be at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery, also in Embarrass. Friends may call at the church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
