The Townsend Centennial Committee will meet at 5:30 p.m. May 13 at the Old Town Hall on state Highway 32. The committee invites anyone interested in helping plan centennial events to attend.
Steering committee members Pam Bursek, Sandy Bursek, Judi Fellows, Jean Fietzer and Kathleen Marsh are preparing for Townsend’s hundredth birthday, which is April 4, 2016.
“We have wonderful and exciting ideas to make our township’s birthday very special,” said Marsh, the committee’s chairperson. “We will be selling souvenir buttons, T-shirts and sweatshirts and are preparing a keepsake publication. We are also planning at least one event for each month starting with the re-enactment of the founding of Townsend on April 2 and ending with the Oct. 1 Red Light Saloon show, which will be in tribute to the town’s logging heritage.”
All events and dates are subject to change, but the tentative schedule for 2016 includes the following events:
- April 2: “A Town is Born,” Markuby’s/Old Town Hall Restaurant.
- May 28: The History of Townsend, Town Hal.
- June 18: Church Revival, Town Hall grounds.
- July 4: Centennial Float in the annual Fourth of July parade, Town Center.
- Aug. 13: Box Lunch Social and Suffragette Rally, Oughton Park Pavilion.
- Sept. 9: Cemetery Walk, Forest Home Cemetery.
- Oct. 1: Red Light Saloon, Townsend Town Hall.
