The Lunch Hour Book Discussion Group will meet at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 11, at Oconto Falls Community Library to discuss “A Reliable Wife” by Robert Goolrick. The locale is Wisconsin in 1907 with a blizzard coming in, and the wealthy owner of an iron foundry is waiting for his mail-order bride from Chicago.
This is a psychological tale that would remind the reader of Stephen King or Edgar Allen Poe, as Catherine has her own agenda.
Participants are invited to bring a light lunch and join others who enjoy talking about books. Everyone doesn’t necessarily like the particular book chosen for discussion every month, but it’s an opportunity to learn about books and authors. Participants often make recommendations about books they enjoyed.
For light summer reading with a historical background, look for “The All-Girl Filling Station’s Last Reunion” by Fannie Flagg, which is based in Pulaski during World War II. When women started driving frequently, some gas companies had nurses trained for inspecting restrooms. A “certified restroom” was good advertising. The book features WASPS, the women who learned to fly planes in the military while the men were in combat.
