The Gillett School District will replace the roof at its elementary school, a roof laid when the school was built in 1977.
“It’s time to do something,” Superintendent Todd Carlson said.
The cost of the project was estimated at $277,000. The district accepted a $246,770 bid from Customform Corporation, of Mauston, which submitted the lowest of four bids.
Replacing the roof will result in a utility savings of at least $15,000 per year, Carlson said. The completed project will qualify for credits for energy savings.
The district can opt to break the job into two phases, the first costing $155,130 and the second, $91,640. With this option, a divider would be built between the repaired portion and the damaged portion of the roof to protect the job from weather damage.
However, if the district opts to replace the roof in two phases, the cost of the second half of the work could change, depending on cost of materials when the decision is made to complete the work. The district also would be responsible for an extra charge of $3,500 for project management.
The district budgeted $50,000 toward the project in the 2012-2013 budget. Last year, the district budgeted another $50,000. Carlson said that if the district plans to budget $50,000 for the 2014-2015 school year, $150,000 would be available.
With little discussion, the School Board on Thursday accepted the $155,130 bid from Customform Corporation for the first project, and if funds are available by June 15, accepted the $91,640 bid for the second project.
The project is scheduled to begin this summer.
