A new 10-year lease for the Shawano Area Agricultural Society to operate the Shawano County Fairgrounds took a step forward earlier this month.
The Shawano County Public Property Committee on Aug. 8 approved the deal, which will be forwarded to the Shawano County Board for approval at its Aug. 28 meeting.
Operation of the fairgrounds was subject to a 10-year deal that ran through Dec. 31, 2025. However, the updated lease will run from Aug. 28, 2024, to Dec. 31, 2033.
Revenue of about $35,000 from the county’s cropland will be used for necessary repairs and maintenance of the fairgrounds. If the cropland is sold or revenue is less than $35,000, county officials will determine alternate methods to fund the repairs.
However, the ag society must abide by county practices of seeking approval for repair and maintenance projects before they are completed when using those funds. Projects performed without approval may be the sole financial responsibility of the ag society.
At the Aug. 1 meeting of the Shawano County Ag and Extension Committee, members refused to pay a $393 invoice from Peters Concrete Company. Members agreed the job did not follow the set procedures.
Also, the committee noted it wants to know of all improvements to the fairgrounds, even if the project does not require financing.
