Valentine’s Day is a part of February, as well as Groundhog Day, President’s Day, Susan B. Anthony Day and George Washington’s birthday. However, the day most observed is Valentine’s Day.
The other day someone told me it’s become a day designed to help the sales of candy makers, flower shops and jewelry stores! Well, that’s a little cynical. Originally, of course, St. Valentine’s Day began in the Christian world as a liturgical celebration of the martyred saint of the same name.
According to lore, St. Valentine, just before he was executed, wrote a note of farewell to a young girl that he had healed, signing it “your Valentine.” The day was first associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. In 18th century England, lovers expressed love with flowers, confections and handwritten notes. The notes became known as valentines. I think that’s a much more romantic way to look at the special day, don’t you?
The Box in the Wood Theatre Guild recently held its monthly meeting, and an appointment was made to fulfill the term of a resigning member of the board. Our board of directors includes Mary Madsen, president; Denise Riley, vice president; Amy Steenbock, secretary; Joyous Bowen, treasurer; Ann Van Grinsven, past president; Brandon Byng, Cheryl Folkerts, Early Fuller, Sandra Wehmeyer and Nathaniel Madsen.
Remember, anyone is welcome to attend our monthly meetings, which are held the first Monday of the month. In the winter months, we are meeting at the Shawano County Courthouse in the lower level. Otherwise, we meet at the Mielke Arts Center.
Our next production, as you all know by now, is “M*A*S*H.” Rehearsals are underway and stage construction has begun. We hope to have a display in the lobby of military photos and memorabilia pertaining to the Korean War (the conflict in which the play is set).
We’re proud to say that the Shawano AMVETS Post 10 will be involved on opening night, Thursday, April 23. We thank them for their support!
