Door County Untied sneaks past Wittenberg-Birnamwood swim team

Oct. 10 Door County United 86, Wittenberg-Birnamwood 84 It came down to the last event of the night, and although Wittenberg-Birnamwood won the 400-yard freestyle relay, it was what happened further down the line that mattered. Door County swimmers earned the second- and third-place spots, for six total points, while the Chargers’ other team placed fourth for no points. The meet began with the 200-yard medley relay, and Wittenberg-Birnamwood’s Brooklyn Beran, Reese Dickman, Rylee Crick and Olivia Bessette placed second in 2:00:85, just 0.15 seconds behind the winning Door County team. Allison Schmid, Chloe Hanson, Elizabeth Behnke and Ava Filtz placed fourth. In the 200-yard freestyle, Beran was second in 2:15.44, followed by Claire Timm in fourth in 2:25.27 and Andrea Powell in fifth in 2:34.08. Kelsie Davis earned the first win for the Chargers, claiming the top spot in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:18.83. Crick was fifth in 2:38.02. Faith Resch won the 50-yard freestyle in 25.31. Dickman was second in 26.32, and Hanson placed fifth in 33.89. Davis won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:01.83. She was joined by Crick in fourth in 1:13.66 and Ava Hegewald in fifth in 1:20.19. Resch then won the 100-yard freestyle in 1:00.88. Timm placed third in 1:06.92, and Schmid was fifth in 1:10.58. In the 500-yard freestyle, Bessette was the top Charger with a third-place finish in 6:27.43. Powell was fifth in 6:55.04, and Behnke was sixth. Resch, Davis, Crick and Dickman teamed up to win the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:45.12. Bessette, Timm, Hegewald and Powell placed third in 1:59.40. Beran won the 100-yard backstroke in 1:05.66. Schmid was fourth in 1:25.17. Dickman won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:13.76, with Hegewald in fifth in 1:23.36 and Hanson in sixth. That set up the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay. Resch, Beran, Bessette and Davis won in 3:59.13. Door County teams captured the second and third spots, with Timm, Hegewald, Powell and Schmidt finishing in fourth.
