Throughout our society we are encouraged to eat healthy and exercise on a regular basis. In the past year I discovered an exercise class that was available during the fall and winter months.
The Strong Bones program was introduced by Oconto County University of Wisconsin-Extension Family Living Agent Donna Doll-Yogerst. Strong Bones is a low-impact progressive weight training, flexibility and balance program. It is safe and effective for people of all ages, even if they are not in perfect health. Strength training improves bone density, reduces falls, improves arthritis symptoms, increases flexibility and increases strength. This program has been well received by residents in Oconto County.
Oconto County UW-Extension Family Living Agent Donna Doll-Yogerst has lost her position. The Oconto County Extension and Education Committee has decided to not renew her contract. As a result, the Strong Bones classes have been cancelled. As a 30-year employee of the Oconto County UW-Extension, she has served the health and nutritional needs of county residents.
Women in the town of Brazeau have participated in these programs because they were held at our town hall. They no longer had to drive to villages many miles away to receive valuable exercise. They discovered the benefits of getting off the couch and moving, such as improved mood, reduction in depression, better sleep, improved energy and the social satisfaction of gathering with friends and meeting new people.
By the cancellation of these exercise classes, the Oconto County Extension Committee has removed a valuable resource from Oconto County residents.
The Oconto County Extension and Education committee consisting of Guy Gooding, chairperson, Chris Augustine, Karl Ballestad, Bill Grady and Buzz Kamke are not looking out for the educational needs of the citizens of our county.
We must bring the Strong Bones classes back to Oconto County. You can do that by calling your Oconto County district supervisor and request Ms. Doll-Yogerst be reinstated to her position as Oconto County UW-Extension family living agent.
