The Oconto Falls High School cheer competition team placed third in nonstunt and fourth in cheer dance at the Wisconsin Association of Cheer and Pom Coaches state competition Feb. 28 at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison.
The team of nine girls advanced to state after placing first in cheer dance and second in nonstunt at the regional competition Feb. 15 at Waupaca High School. It was the seventh time in eight years the competition team from Oconto Falls High School has advanced to the state contest.
Team members are Cortney Meunier, Haley Meunier, Hannah Raasch, Kendra Lofthus, Mariah Boushka, Evy O’Harrow, Kaylee Greetan, Samantha Birr and Joanna Niswonger.
The team competed in six events prior to regional competition and has one more appearance, a showcase performance at Fond du Lac High School on Sunday.
The girls prepared for competition during after-school and Saturday practices. Besides competing, the girls cheered at football and basketball games.
The team is comprised of two seniors, two juniors and five sophomores. Coach Kim Kruse said it was a young and inexperienced team. Only four of the nine of the girls were members of the cheer competition team last year.
Becky Doan, a 2014 graduate of Oconto Falls High School, choreographed the nonstunt routine for the team.
