Shawano Community High School hosted an exotic pet surrender Jan. 11, organized by J&R Aquatic Animal Rescue (JRAAR) in collaboration with the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant/Water Resources Institutes, WAMSCO, and the Menominee County Conservation/Forestry/Zoning Department.
This event marked the first of 29 planned for 2025. These events provide a judgment-free space for pet owners to surrender exotic animals they can no longer care for. Two animals were surrendered: a Chinese algae eater and a ball python affectionately named Sirius Black.
“Our exotic pet surrender events fill a critical need in communities where rehoming options for exotic animals are limited,” said Melissa Gassner, JRAAR’s surrender event specialist. “By providing a safe, accessible and stigma-free environment, we ensure that these animals find the care they need while protecting our ecosystems from potential harm.”
Participants were also treated to educational opportunities, including a chance to meet animal ambassadors and learn about their unique stories. The event’s photo booth offered a way for attendees to capture memories alongside rescued pets, further fostering connections between people and animals.
Surrendered animals will undergo a brief quarantine period before becoming available for adoption through JRAAR, ensuring they find new, loving homes.
