Five Gillett/Suring high school wrestlers qualified for the WIAA Division 3 sectional tournament following their regional performances Saturday at Coleman.
Coleman captured the regional title with 264.5 points and advanced to the team sectionals. Gillett/Suring placed fifth.
Grant Fischer (32-8) won Gillett/Suring’s only regional title with a 6-1 decision over Bonduel’s Travis Wollenberg (30-11) in the 138-pound championship.
“He controlled the match and did a real nice job,” Gillett/Suring coach Mitchell Szwet said. “It is hard to face a top quality wrestler like Wollenberg, but it was a great match overall.”
Szwet said the most surprising sectional qualifier was sophomore Dante Carlson, who entered the match with an 8-16 record at 220 pounds. Carlson pinned Shiocton’s Ben Gunderson with less than 30 seconds remaining to finish second.
“I told my guys that it does not matter what record you have entering regionals, as long as you bring your best game at tournament time, you will be fine,” Szwet said.
Carlson won three of his four matches, including a quarterfinal pin against Menominee Indian’s Alonzo Haack at 3 minutes, 52 seconds.
“He has peaked at the right time,” Szwet said.
Gillett/Suring’s other qualifiers for the sectional Saturday at Shawano Community High School were Garrett Kohls (120), Alex Zeitler (152) and Broden Bennin (195).
